When to Deck the Halls: A Collaborative Look at Christmas Decorating

Writer's picture: Jamie PierceJamie Pierce

As the holiday season approaches, the question arises: When is the right time to start decorating for Christmas? While some may dive into the festive spirit right after Halloween, I prefer to savor the beauty of fall and wait until December to deck my halls. Allowing me to fully enjoy the cozy vibes of autumn and spooky festivities, before transitioning into the cheerful chaos of Christmas.

For me, December is the perfect month to start decorating. The chill in the air, white snow and the anticipation of holiday festivities make it feel like a magical time. By waiting until December, I can appreciate every last moment of fall—watching horror movies and the colors of fall. Plus, when I finally do decorate, it feels like a grand celebration with my husband that kicks off the holiday season!

I’ve also asked my head of social media about their decorating timelines, and here’s what they had to say:

Ashley: When it comes to the whole Christmas decoration debate, I'm totally team "put 'em up right after Halloween"! Like, as soon as the last trick-or-treater's gone or it hits midnight on Halloween, boom – it's Christmas time for me. Well, except for that one day when we stuff our faces with turkey and all the fixings during thanksgiving.

Love her enthusiasm but I love to buy Halloween decor when it goes on clearance. Gives me time to plan ahead, plus think about how to place will look for Christmas. I like to draw a map first before diving into another holiday.

Ashley: I love swapping out those spooky Halloween lights for twinkling Christmas ones right away. There's just something about those pretty holiday lights that makes everything feel happy! That's why I'm always telling people to go for it and deck the halls as soon as Halloween's over. Once I've got all my Christmassy stuff up inside and out, I keep it going strong until after New Year's. Gotta keep that happy holiday vibe going for a couple of months.

She's right about the holiday vibes, although it takes me a while to get into the spirit. Especially with Thanksgiving in-between, so that's why I wait a bit until December rolls around.
